A Penn Yan man was listed in fair condition this morning at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital with burns suffered in an explosion and fire at the Martin Tones garage yesterday morning. Timothy Stage, 36, of 131 Flat St., suffered burns on his arms, leg and face when a can of paint thinner exploded.
Penn Yan police said Stage was welding a truck in the body shop section of the garage ai 108 Lake St. when a can of paint thinner at the rear of the truck apparently was touched off by sparks from the welder. Robert Tones and his brother Martin, co-owners of the garage, and Martin's son, Bud, used fire extinguishers to contain the resulting fire before Penn Yan volunteer firefighters arrived. Robert Tones said the force of the explosion separated part of the wall which is of wood construction from the upper section. He also said windows came out of the overhead doors in the explosion. Tones said the fire caused considerable smoke damage and char damage to the rack area of the body shop but that the fire was put out before it could cause greater damage. Tones said the fire put the body shop 'out of business for a while until we get it back together again.' The rest of the garage facilities were not damaged and are in service. - Finger Lakes Times January 30, 1979
