Penn Yan - Three Yates County men will be honored for their heroic efforts Feb. 2 attempting to save the life of Homer Dinehart of Bluff Point. Dinehart had died of drowning after falling into the waters of Keuka Lake. William L. Athawes, 470 West Lake Rd., Penn Yan, Michael S. Flood and Douglas O. Smart, both of Branchport, all members of the Town of Jerusalem High Dept., will be awarded certificates of merit by the national organization. This is the highest honor awarded by the Red Cross. It had been recommended by Robert Ernst, Finger Lakes State Park ranger and an accredited life saving instructor for the American Red Cross. The men had seen Dinehart in the water, manned a boat and brought him to shore applying artificial respiration until the ambulance had arrived. The awards will be presented Sept. 13 at a dinner at the Dresden Hotel under the supervision of the board of directors for the local Red Cross. - The Geneva Times August 30, 1972 Found him on the 1925 Jerusalem, Yates, New York state census (A.D.01 E.D.03 img 2) as Homer W. Dinehart age 4.
