Although many records show his name as
August Wittenburg, the evidence is that he is the biological son of
August Kleinsmith (Kleinschmidt), who died in 1891.

August Kleinsmith age 1.
Found him on the 1900 Olean, Cattaraugus, New York census (dist 59 img 23) as
August Wittenburg age 8.
Found him on the 1905 Olean Ward 5, Cattaraugus, New York state census (E.D.01 img 18) as
August Wittenburg age 13.
Olean, Sept. 26 - Yesterday morning a 17-year-old boy named August Kleinsmith, a son of Mrs. William Wittenberg, who lived on Fifteenth street, was fatally injured on the street railroad on West State street, near Twelfth. It is stated that the young man was riding on one of the gondola work cars and in some manner fell. He was badly injured about the legs, the flesh of the left leg being torn loose almost the entire length of the limb. The right foot and leg was also out and bruised. He was taken to the hospital, where Drs. Smith and Lrugblen performed an operation. The boy rallied nicely, but at 6:30 o'clock in the afternoon be died as the result of shock. Besides his mother and Step-father, he leaves four brothers and two sisters, Henry, Freddie, William, Eddie, Sophia and Minnie. - The Republican Press September 26, 1908.
