Found him on the 1880 Lancaster, Lancaster, Pennsylvania census (dist 160 img 21) as
Gottl. Schmid age 33, printer
Gottlieb Schmid, a former well known resident of Lancaster, died on Thursday at his home in Philadelphia, from a throat aflection. He had been ill for some time past, although he was in Lancaster recently.
He was born in Switzerland and for many years lived in Lancaster. In 1870 he started The Laterne, German weekly paper, in connection with Joesph Schmid. The deceased finally purchased the interest of his partner and conducted the paper up to 1879, when he moved to Philadelphia, where he first engaged in the printing business, but of late years had been a book-keeper.
His wife was Miss Kate Finger, of this city, and besides her, eight sons and a daughter survive.
