Found him on the 1940 Plattsburgh, Clinton, New York census (dist 10-34 img 15) as
Walter J. Toner age 53, taxi business. Address: 9 Hamilton St.
Walter J. Toner, widely known taxi operator, died at his home at 9 Hamilton Street early yesterday afternoon; He had been ill for about two months. His age was 63.
A native of Hemmingford, P.Q. where he was born Oct 5, 1886, Mr. Toner came to this city in 1913.
He served with the 547th Motor Truck company of the 438th Supply Train during World War I, seeing action in France. He was decorated
several times, and was discharged with the rank of sergeant. He was a member of American Legion Post 20 of this city.
Mr. Toner had operated a taxi stand for 30 years, nearly all of that time at the junction of Brinkerhoff and Margaret streets.
Survivors include his wife, two sons, Walter Toner, Jr., and Donald; a brother, Joel, and three sisters, Miss Nellie Toner, Mrs. Harry Weston and Mrs. Margaret McDowell, all of this city. - Plattsburgh Press-Republican July 10, 1948
