Poughkeepsie, July 1. - Jerome Sagendorf, 65 years of age, of 17 Bedding avenue, committed suicide this morning by hanging himself to an apple tree in the pasture back of Mayor Sherrill's house on Washington street.
Mr. Sagendorf had worked for many years in Lown's cooper shop, but for some time a fatal disease had incapacitated him for work, and within a few days he had become very despondent. He arose at daybreak this morning and hastily dressing himself, took a clothesline from the kitchen and left the house. Mr. Sagendorf's yard backs up to Mayor Sherrill's property on Washington street, a fence separating the yard from the pasture. Springing over the fence, Mr. Sagendorf selected a large apple tree, climbed up into it and doubling his rope so as to make it sure to hold, he tied one end to an outspreading branch and placed the loop at the end around his neck. Then he dropped out of the tree and hung with his toes about a foot from the ground.
He was not discovered until 7 o'clock, when a boy saw the body and notified Mayor Sherrill, who telephoned to the police and Coroner Frost. Chief Platto went directly to the place and cut down the body, and when the Coroner arrived he had the body carried into Mr. Sagendorf's house. The Sun July 2, 1899
