Mrs. Nellie C. Thayer, 72, of Ghent, a direct descendant of a Claverack Revolutionary War general as well as another veteran of that war who later became the first Democratic governor of Delaware, died Saturday in Columbia Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Born in Claverack, Mrs. Thayer was a direct descendant of Caleb Prew Bennett, a major in the Revolutionary War and later governor of Delaware. Her great-grandfather was Brig. Gen. James Fleming of Claverack.
Mrs. Thayer was a member of Mt. Merino Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Hudson, the VFW Auxiliary of Ghent, and St. Luke's
Episcopal Church, Chatham, and Chatham Grange No. 900.
Surviving is her husband, George; three daughters, Mrs. Roscoe Fingar and Mrs. Franklin Bassakalis of West Ghent, and Mrs. Malcolm Van Loan, Chatham; two sons, Calvin C. Thayer, Chatham, and Clifford G. Thayer, Huntington, L. I., 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. - Chatham Courier April 9, 1959
