Corp. John Rowland of 76 Second Street, who has sustained three injuries since he enlisted in the service in September, 1941, has returned for further treatment to the hospital at Camp Edwards, after a furlough here during which he was married to Miss Mary O'Connor.

A member of the 29th Division, U.S. Infantry, Corporal Rowland went to Iceland in August 1942, remaining there for 17 months, during which time he suffered a serious back injury while out with the Ski Rescue Patrol. He was with the 29th Division when it landed in Normandy on D-Day...

He is the recipient of the Purple Heart, four battle stars, a divisional citation, the pre-Pearl Harbor badge, the combat infantry badge and other decorations. - New Haven Register, 1945
