Found her on the 1930 Ivy Hill, Haywood, North Carolina census (dist 14 img 23) as
Mary Finger Greer, age 96, passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at her residence.
A native of Haywood County, she was a daughter of the late
John Calvin and
Sarah Eliza Mehaffey Finger. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
Joseph C. Wolfe, Jr. who died in 1966 and her second husband,
William Greer, who died in 1985. Mary began her working career in 1941. During the next three years she worked for Wellco making shoes and Dayco making life rafts. In 1944, at the age of 21, Mary was recruited by the Department of Navy to work in Washington, DC where she lived in a women’s dormitory. In 1958, she began working for the National Security Agency in Fort Meade, Maryland, until she retired in 1973. She returned to Waynesville to enjoy her passions; gardening and quilting. She was a member of the Waynesville Garden Club. Her gardens were so impressive that she hosted a group of fellow gardeners from Europe. Mary’s other passion was quilting, which were all sewn by hand. Her embroidery and quilting skills were incomparable and are admired by friends and family today.
Mary is survived by a son,
Christopher J. Wolfe, and his wife,
Carol, of Lake Lure; two brothers,
Jack Finger, and his wife,
Olin, and
Lee Finger, and his wife,
Susan, all of Asheville; two grandchildren,
Katie Jones, and her husband,
Jay, and
Daniel Wolfe, and his wife,
Crystal; and three great-grandchildren,
Aubrey, Bryan and
Aly.
