ACCIDENTALLY DROWNED. - Coroner Gamble, on Saturday, held an inquest upon the body of John Nelson Finger, late, second engineer, of the steamboat Cornelius Vanderbilt, who was accidentally drowned on Friday, by falling from the string piece of pier No. 2 North River, into the dock.
It appears, that at the time of the occurrence he was conversing with a Mr. Buss, and seeing a cart approach, he stepped back, supposing that his foot would rest on the gang plank of the Cornelius Vanderbilt, but it did not, and he fell into the water.
Every effort was made by Mr. Russ and others to rescue him, but he being unable to swim, sank and was drowned. He was a native of New York, 31 years of age, and leaves a family to mourn his loss. The jury rendered a verdict of accidental death. - New-York Daily Tribune July 23, 1855
