Athens - George W. Finger III died Wednesday morning fighting an 8-year battle with cancer. He was 60.
A native of Athens, GA, Finger, always with a humorous toilet paper story to tell, spent 30 years as a traveling salesman for Thornton Brothers Paper Company. In addition, an accomplished photographer, he operated the company Classic Photography and Video Production.
Other devotions included past service as President of the Oconee County Jaycees, listening to Elvis's 'My Way', and becoming both a Memphis in May Certified BBQ Judge and a Kansas City Barbeque Society Master Judge.
He was a 1961 graduate of Athens High and attended UGA. A Christian, he worshiped at Calvary Chapel in Athens and was a 32nd Degree Mason.
Survivors include his wife Dianne, son Jeff and daughter-in-law Holly of Dunwoody, parents George Jr. and Carlene of Athens, brother Ray of Winterville and sister Rita Salisbury of Bluefield, West Virginia.
Funeral services will be in the chapel of Lord and Stephens, West, today at 3 PM. Pallbearers include Stan Sheram of Athens, Carl Gooch of Milledgeville, JA Peck of Athens, Lamar Duncan of Athens, Billy Moorehead of Hartwell and David Carroll of Toccoa. - Athens Banner-Herald, May 2, 2004
