Probably the oldest cigar maker in Buffalo is Ferdinand Ring, head of Ferdinand Ring & Son, 98 Eaton St. A native of Hanover, Germany, he came to Buffalo in 1882 to ply his trade and has been at it ever since. He is now nearly 85.
"Conditions today are bad, very bad," Ring said. "There is plenty of tobacco, both domestic and Havana, but we just can't get the skilled labor. Cigar making is not a haphazard trade; it requires good judgment and fast, nimble fingers. A few more years and there will be no such trade, particularly in this section. All the cigar makers are getting up in years.
Ring, who still makes a popular five-cent cigar — and insists he will stick to it to the very last — operates his shop at the rear of his Eaton St. home, assisted by his son, Ferdinand, Jr., who is 59. - Buffalo Courier-Express November 28, 1943
