Olean - (UP) - Police keep their 'fingers' on the city's crime here 24 hours a day. Police Capt George E. Finger, a member of the force for 23 years, works the day trick while his brother, Capt Edward P. Finger, a 21-year veteran, works the night desk. - The Knickerbocker News May 1, 1947

Police Captain George E. Finger of Olean has announced that he will be a candidate for the Republican nomination for sheriff of Cattaraugus County. His announcement followed the announcement of Sheriff Morgan L. Sigel that he would seek the G. O. P. nomination to succeed himself. Captain Finger has been a member of the Olean Police Department for twenty-three years and was made a captain in 1931. He has been a life long resident of Olean and is a veteran of World War I. Besides being a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, he is a deacon of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. - The Portville Review May 6, 1948

Former Olean Police Chief George E. Finger, 69, 1032 W. Sullivan St., died today (Jan. 12, 1965) at the Olean General Hospital. He was admitted to the hospital last Thursday morning as a medical patient, and was reported in critical condition last weekend.

He served in the Police Department 36 years prior to his retirement in 1960. A native of Olean he was appointed a patrolman in 1924 by George H. Pierce, then mayor. He was named captain in 1931 by Earl C. Vedder, mayor, and became Chief in 1952. He was appointed chief by the late William N. Davis, mayor, succeeding John C. Dempsey.

"Chief" Finger was born June 17, 1895 and would have been 70 this coming June. He attended Olean High School and left school after three years to take his first job as a machinist with the Pennsylvania Railroad. Later he was employed by the Olean, Bradford, and Salamanca Railway Co.

DURING WORLD WAR I, he served overseas 23 of the 28 months he was in uniform. He was a sergeant with the 19th Engineers.

During his police career, he served while headquarters were located in a brick building, still standing, on Whitney Ave.

For many years, both he and his late brother, Edward Finger, were members of the Police Department at the same time. His brother was a police captain.

In the 1920's he coached a semi-pro baseball team in Olean. An expert on Olean history, he was an excellent source of information about the city's early days.

Mr. Finger was married June 27, 1922 to the former Miss Gladys Cort of Allegany, who survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Jan (Gladys) Keller, Hinsdale Rd., and several nieces and nephews. - Olean Times Herald January 12, 1965.
