Samuel H. Finger, 97, of Hiawatha, formerly of Powhattan, passed away Friday evening April 1, 2011 at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha where he had been a resident for several years.
Sam was born July 15, 1913 near Powhattan, the son of Christian and Clara (Wenger) Finger. He lived nearly all of his life around Powhattan where he attended school.
Sam joined the Army and served during World War II, serving in the 19th Infantry Division, Rapid Deployment Force. He served in the Pacific Theater, Luzon, Southern Philippines, and New Guinea, receiving the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 Bronze Service Stars, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He often had reunions with his close buddies in Hiawatha in later years.
Sam married Minnie Reeves, September 1, 1945 at her brother’s home in Kansas City, Kansas. Minnie and Sam made their home south-west of Powhattan where they farmed and raised livestock for many years before retiring and moving into Hiawatha. Minnie preceded him in death on December 27, 2007.
Sam served on the committee for the Brown County ASCS for many years where he had served as chairman. He also served on the Powhattan School Board; was the founder of the Kansas Limousine Association; and had served on the board of trustees for Powhattan Township. He was a member of the Powhattan Methodist Church and had served on the board of directors. Sam also was a member of the Wenger Post #373, Powhattan American Legion.
Sam also preceded in death by his parents; a sister Elizabeth Andres; and three brothers: Emiel, Chris, and Ernest.
Sam is survived by his son Keith and wife Kathie Finger of Cherry Hills Village, Colorado; two brothers: Ruben Finger of Horton, Eddie Finger of Powhattan; a sister Helen Dodge of Topeka; many nieces and nephews
