Marjorie Heckel Finger, 74, the founder of Maplebrook School in Amenia, died Saturday, January 22, at the Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vt.
Mrs. Finger founded the school in 1945 when she was 33, and worked there until her retirement in 1980. She moved from Amenia to the Pillars in Sherburne, Vt.
She was born in Auburn on May 8, 1908, the daughter of Joseph W. and Ellen G. Funnell Bryant.
She was first married to Charles Heckel, who predeceased her. He was the owner and operator of the Heckel Shoe Company, of Cincinnati, Ohio, which later moved to Auburn under the name of the Dunn and McCarthy Shoe Company. After Mr. Heckel's death, his wife founded the Maplebrook School, a private institution for handicapped children.
In 1947, she was married to John Finger of Amenia who predeceased her.
In 1980 she was named president emeritus of the board of directors of Maplebrook.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Toner of Pittsburgh; three grandchildren, a great grandson; and three
